Sprengel's sedge is common in dry to mesic deciduous woodlands, and on streambanks. It prefers a rich, loam soil. It is somewhat clumped and forms loose patches. It produces long arching leaves, and dangling fruiting spikes---very attractive among woodland wildflowers.
